Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 7/5 to 7/11 2003
Hello to all from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, where we had another excellent week of weather and fishing. I will start this weeks fishing report with a group from the Chicago, IL area headed by Tom Nayder, from Orland Park, two sons Alan & Joel from Chicago, sister Leah from Berwyn, Shawn Cummings also from Chicago, and brothers three Jim Sobczak from Homer Glen, Paul and Robert from Plano and Victoria, Tx. This group returns every year and is always ready to get right down to fishing. They had a fabulous week. Starting off fast from the gate was Shawn having a fabulous day of fishing, catching 14 nice Northern Pike including a bar setting 40 inch Master Anglers Award Pike, and he caught several Smallmouth, one being an 19 inch monster Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. On this first day of fishing Jim also set the bar high for Smallmouth, catching 3 Master Anglers Award Smallies measuring at 18.75", 19", and 19.5 inches. The great thing about Jim's Smallmouth catches is that they were all on a fly rod. These catches would prove tough to beat throughout the week. Alan did match Shawn's catch by also landing a 40 inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike, and there was no cheating here as Shawn was in the boat with Alan, and verified his catch for the Master Anglers Award. Alan on this same day also caught a HUGE 41 inch Muskie. Stiff, but friendly competition in this group. First time ever on a trip with this group, Bob also caught a Master Anglers Smallmouth at 18 inches, and lost a knee shaker Muskie at the boat. He had this big monster to the boat several times, and as it looked like Bob was winning the fish just shook it's head boat side, and the last Bob saw of his trophy Muskie was the back of his tail waving good-bye until next time. Tom just missed a Master Anglers Northern Pike by one inch, as he landed a beauty 39 inch fat Pike. Leah,"the Muskie Queen" was Muskieless this trip but fished 85% of the time with a fly rod and caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. Leah is new to the sport of fly fishing and has become very committed. Thanks to Paul, the experienced fly fisher of the group, all of this group started fly fishing last year, and to show you how good Paul is with the fly rod, he ended up with the largest total of fish amongst the group, and Joel was a close second. However, Joel had to leave by 1:00 PM on the last day, so I am sure he will contest that title. All had a great trip catching 415 total fish, 194 Smallmouth, 212 Northern Pike and 5 Muskie not to mention all of the other action in lost fish and follows. Great trip had by all, wonderful memories made, and I think Bob is, and will be having many dreams (nightmares)? about that big one that got away.
Dave Hamilton from Laurel, MD., father Dick, from Reading Pa., good friend and fishing partner Al Sins, from Asheville, NC, and Geoff Jones, from Columbia, MD., were at Fireside Lodge to pursue toothy critter. Having a lot of experience on our waters Dave and Al were teaming up with Dick and Geoff to get them started off, and they got them started off with a bang, as all of them on their first day of fishing caught 38 nice Northern Pike, with two of them at 34 inches and two measuring 35 inches. Great first day for all. Geoff was amazed, as before this he had never caught a Northern Pike in his life and on this day he caught 12. The next day their were two Muskie caught by this group, and the experience showed through her as Dave and Al each landed a Muskie, and they all caught some nice Pike. Another day Dave and Geoff went just strictly Muskie fishing, Geoff catching his first at 30 inches, and Dave managed to put two in the boat, and they also had plenty of follows. While Dave and Geoff were Muskie hunting Al and Dick had a great day Northern Pike fishing, and Dick caught his personal best landing a HUGE 38 inch Pike. You should have seen the extra special gleam in Dick's smile while proudly holding this great catch. On their fifth day the two less experienced, Geoff and Dick, went fishing together with Geoff at the helm, and they did well with Dick catching a nice 36 inch Muskie. That same day Dave and Al missed the same Muskie 3 times. As Al was setting the hook on a Muskie the fish opened his jaws and Al jerked his bait right out of the fishes mouth, then the same fish attacked Dave's bait which was just dangling in the water, and in desperation Dave lowered his bait straight down and the fish struck again, only for Dave to miss again. As in baseball, 3 strikes your out. The last day was Al's as when fishing with Dave he landed a bunch of nice Pike up to 34 inches, and caught a great big Muskie measuring at 40 inches. We had a fun time with these guys as we have done in the past just shooting the breeze in the lodge in the evening time, laughing at funny fish happenings, and also enjoying Dick's great sense of humor and infections laugh. Thanks for coming back.
Frank and Linda Tyrrell, from Snellville, Ga., were back to Fireside Lodge for their second consecutive year. They showed up all smiles and ready to go, and toothy critters is what they were after, Linda trying to beat her last years catch of 44 inches. The first day met with success as they caught 12 nice Northern Pike between 28 and 33 inches, and Frank was very excited about the one he did not catch. He hooked into a monster that he could not move or turn, and that's a big fish because Frank is a 6'4" solid strong framed man. Well, Frank, so much for fish stories, as Linda had picture proof of her 44" catch. They continued to catch a lot of Pike throughout their stay up to 37 inches, only having one off day. They most thing I enjoyed was seeing Frank and Linda's great smiles and positive attitude in the dinning room every day. They made a second set of great memories at Fireside Lodge, and from their sad faces at their last breakfast it probably won't be their last. Thanks for returning to Fireside Lodge.
The next two fellows, Dennis Teague and Johnny Mills from Marietta, Ga., found their way to Fireside Lodge through Frank and Linda Tyrrell. While returning home from fishing trips last year these four sat near each other on the flight home, and Dennis & Johnny were so intrigued by Frank and Linda's fishing experiences at Fireside Lodge that they decided to make reservations with us. The difference was that these two were interested in the Smallmouth Bass fishing we have to offer at Fireside Lodge. Well, they certainly were not disappointed as they caught many Smallmouth and a lot of fish in the 14 to 17 inch range. Their last two days, each day they caught over 40 Smallmouth with a lot 15,16,17 inch Smallmouth, and Johnny caught 5 Master Anglers Award Smallmouth 18 to 19 inches, and Dennis also landed one at 18 inches. They said it was some of the best Smallmouth fishing they have ever had, and were very impressed by the size and girth of each fish.
The Gerulski's, father / son Mike and Zach from Huntington, Mi, and grandfather Ron from Auburn, Mi, were all here to make some new three generation memories. They were on a shorter 3 day fishing package, and they took a day to get orientated with the lake, catching a few fish, and the next two days did great. Concentrating on Smallmouth they did well, catching many, and they also landed some nice Northern Pike. Most of all they had plenty of fun and were always smiling and enjoying their time together. The important things in life are the memories people make together, and I can think of no better way to accomplish this than fishing together.
Robert Doonan, and son Kyle from Newell, Ia., also think this, as it was their 4th time fishing together at Fireside Lodge. We have seen Kyle grow, as the first visit with us 5 years ago he was 14 years old. Even at that age he was very interested in Muskie fishing as he still is. The first day out while Muskie hunting they landed 12 nice Pike ranging in the 30's, and slipped two Smallmouth in their catch record book. The second day of their 3 day trip they caught many Pike, and lost many, in the 30 to 35 inch range, and Bob caught his first ever Muskie at 33 inches. The real bonus of this day was Bob catching an HUMONGOUS 21 inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth while fishing for Pike and Muskie. Congratulations Bob, on your first Muskie, and on your trophy Smallmouth of a lifetime. The night before their last day Kyle came to the lodge in the evening to talk to me about using a Slugo to catch Muskie and Pike. Well, the next day these two caught 16 beauties in the 30 to 36 inch range, 14 being Pike and each caught a Muskie. Guess what, Kyle used a Slugo to catch his Muskie. Great going Kyle.
Gerald Adams, from Shawnee, OK., was at Fireside Lodge for the first time with son Zach. Gerald has been to Fireside many times with friends, Brent Houston, Gary Rose and Mike Rose, but this was Gerald's first time to make memories with his son Zach at Fireside Lodge. Gerald spent the first day showing Zach the technique of finesse fishing a plastic worm. Gerald's theory is, that if you learn this style of fishing everything else will come easy, and I agree with Gerald's theory. Well, it took the better part of the day for Zach to catch on, but Gearld said with a fatherly smile, all of a sudden Zach got it, and bang, bang, bang, caught 6 Smallmouth. From here on out things got easier, and the both had wonderful fun catching Smallmouth bass the rest of the week, one day catching 31, with Zach getting into double figures with 12, and another day catching 25. Lot of the fish they caught were good size, and Gerald, one day while catching 18 Smallmouth, caught a HUGE 19" Master Anglers Award Smallie. What a great catch. It wasn't all about the fishing here as Gerald's main mission was to introduce Zach to fishing, and the great wilderness we have to offer at Fireside Lodge. Mission accomplished, and a lot of new father and son memories were made between Gerald and Zach.
Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make these memories.
Joe Pudlo, from North Chicago, IL., and Henry Koukol, from Spring Grove, IL., were at Fireside lodge for their first time. Well, things started a little slow the first day for these two until they discovered leeches. By 10:30AM they ran out while catching 20+ Smallmouth. They had a few other days catching 20 to 30+ Smallmouth Bass, and one day while targeting Northern Pike caught over 20. These two had a lot of fun in our Lodge meeting and talking with all different people, and Gerald (above) showed these two his fishing technique, of wacky rigging a worm. These are the kind of things that take place in our lodge, the fun of telling fish stories, sharing fishing knowledge and locations, and having loads of laughs.
William Duran and Robert Jostes from Mokena, IL., Frank Zanocco, from Orland Park, IL., and John Niko from Cicero, IL., were also at Fireside Lodge for their first experience. First day ever on the lake Bill and Frank caught 20 Northern Pike. The whole group on their second day caught a lot of Northern Pike, and 4 Muskie. Imagine that the second day on a new lake system and a group of four lands 4 Muskie. Another day Bill and Frank landed another two Muskie and 27 Northern Pike between 30 to 36 inches. Robert and John had a day they caught a bunch of Pike on a portage lake, and these four continued throughout the week to catch Northern Pike.
The Kottman family Wayne and Lori, with daughter Jennifer and son Scott from Columbus, Ohio, had a great family fishing vacation at Fireside Lodge. The first day fishing this family adventured into one of our creek accessible lakes catching 12 nice Northern Pike, and Jennifer had the biggest at 36 inches. The second day father and daughter portaged to Booger Lake and caught over 30 Pike while Mother and son fished for Smallmouth and did well. The third day they all fished for Smallies and caught lots, well over 50 maybe 60. Fourth day while Lori stayed back for a day to herself Wayne, Jennifer, and Scott had a great day catching 15 Smallmouth Bass and Scott landed a GIANT 20 inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth, and they also caught 3 Muskie up to 32 inches. All in all this family made great family memories to last a lifetime, and thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to add to your family memory book.
Father and son Gerald Cornier, from Sycamore, IL, and David from Dekalb, IL, came to Fireside Lodge in search of BIG Northern Pike and Muskie. They accomplished their goal each catching a Master Angers Award Northern Pike. Gerald caught a 42 incher, and Dave's came in at a close second at 41.5 inches. They caught a number of other fish in the mid 30 inch range, and had plenty of action in follows with a few lost fish. As Audrey and I have always said, a fishing trip means different things to different people, and Gerald and Dave had it their way. Thanks for coming back.
Father and son Harry and Craig Roberts and friends Danny Handley and Denny Wroe all from Hawesville, Ky., except for Denny, were all back for their second consecutive trip to Fireside Lodge. Listen to these fishing results. Craig and Harry caught 61 Northern Pike and 48 Smallmouth during their stay with a lot of other action in the way of follows, and lost fish at the boat. Denny, first timer, and Danny caught 89 Pike and Muskie and 45 Smallmouth. More that 50% of the Northern Pike and Muskie were 30 to 36 inches and they all caught Master Anglers Award fish. Danny recorded a 18 and 18.5 inch Smallmouth, Denny caught a 18.5 incher, Harry caught a HUGE 19 inch Smallie, and the youngster came out catching two Master Anglers Award fish, a Smallmouth at 18 inches and 46 inch Northern Pike. WOW what great fishing and fun these four had at Fireside Lodge. Thanks for returning, and hope to see all again.
Peter and Cydney Bulens, from Benidji, Mn., were at Fireside Lodge for their first time to appreciate a different Northern experience, than they have every day. These two enjoyed their stay at Fireside Lodge not for just fishing, but as lovers of the north and wilderness atmosphere. Because of cold front conditions and some strong winds they chose to spend 2 days in their cabin and the main lodge reading, and enjoying each others company. On the other three days of fishing the caught Smallmouth and Pike, and on the last day Cydney caught her first Muskie ever. She was very excited, as she should, and has already sent a picture of her catch to us. Look for this picture to be posted on our web site come December, but it will be Pete holding Cydney's catch.
A return group headed by Ryan Briggs, Bartlett, IL., father Gerald, Jackson, Tn., Brian Stoner, Bartlett, IL., Thomas Gohr, N. Aurora, IL., Alan Gage, Frankfort, IL., and Joel Gage, Edwater, Fl., were her to pursue toothy critters. They did exactly that and caught lots of them in their 4 days of fishing. They never could keep exact count, but they caught a lot of Northern Pike and some Muskie between 30 to 38 inches, and Ryan ended up on top for big fish, catching a 41 inch Muskie, 40 inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike, and without even trying for them landed two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth at 19 and 18.5 inches. Ryan also caught the 41" Muskie and 40" Pike on the same day. What a great day for Ryan and great fishing trip for all.
That's the fishing report for this weeks adventures at Fireside Lodge. Look for the next fishing report soon and until then "Keep On Fish'n"
