Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 7/5 to 7/12 2008
Hello from Fireside Lodge in beautiful Northwest, Ontario, Canada. Most of the week was great weather, as we had temperatures in the low 70’s, but the week ended up with a north cold front blowing in dumping almost 3 inches of rain within 24 hours, with winds gusting up to 70 kilometers per hour.
Al Sins was back at Fireside Lodge for his ninth time bringing a friend Andy Delong both from Asheville, NC These two had a ball searching for toothy critters. They had several days where they landed over 20 Northern Pike. One day while Muskie fishing they had a lot of action seeing follows, hooking two that got away at the boat, and Al landed a beautiful 40 inch Muskie. They also had a rare Musky sighting, that could not be actually called a follow because it did not chase either Al or Andy’s lures. They just saw it as it swam up to and past the boat, seemingly looked at them and waved goodbye with it’s tail. Al estimated it to be 48 to 52 inches. WOW! Al sent me an email with their total catches and here it is: Our totals were 97 fish and we probably lost almost that many. We got 2 Muskie, one at 40-inches, 3 lost at the boat and 39 follows. We probably spent at least half of our time chasing Muskie. 62 pike with both of us getting a 31 inch. Smallmouth total was 33 with Andy getting a 17.5. Not a bad first ever Smallmouth. He also beat me with 18 fish to my 15. Hope to see you again soon.
These two also has fun just being in the great wilderness we have at Fireside Lodge. This was Andy’s first trip and he was having a great time seeing everything for the first time. We also had fabulous conversations and plenty of laughs in the lodge at evening time. Both plan on returning in 2009.
Dave Hamilton from Odenton, MA, returning to Fireside Lodge for his ninth year and this time with this wife Pam, Dave was also meeting up with long time friend and fishing partner Al Sins and his friend Andy. Dave and Pam wrote Audrey and I a very nice letter about their first fishing trip together at Fireside Lodge after returning home, and I am sure Dave would enjoy me sharing Pam and his experience at Fireside Lodge. So here it is:
“Hi Alan and Audrey,
Pam and I want to thank you again for a wonderful honeymoon vacation. Having the cabin made the trip very special for us. Our fishing for the 4 days was more fishing than catching. We lost several fish, we think more than we landed, including my losing a nice Muskie and pike at boat side. We caught a total of 37 fish, eighteen and one half each. The one half is a bass that Pam hooked and I hand-lined to the boat while she dealt with a tangle in the line. Pam caught her first Pike, Muskie and Smallmouth this trip. On Saturday, she had the Triple Crown catching two Muskie, two Bass and one Pike. Our largest fish for the trip were her first Pike and Bass (at 31 and 17.5 inches respectively) and my 32 inch Muskie.
We really enjoyed the camaraderie in the evenings in the lodge. You really succeed in making Fireside Lodge a “home away from home”. Please give our best to Camille and all of your wonderful staff. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Pam & Dave Hamilton
Back for their second trip in three years was Don McCann, Dennis Ballinger, and Chris and Sean Patrick from Ozark, Brookline, Station, Nixa, and Springfield, MO. These four had a great four day fishing and catching trip. First day they warmed up catching 56 Northern Pike and Don came up with the special catch being an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. Second day Don and Shawn caught 87 Northern Pike with Dennis and Chris landing 60-70. Third day was a special day for Don, and Chris both catching their first ever Musky and Chris landed and 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. The fourth and final day they finished strong catching 106 Northern Pike. All had a fun fishing and GREAT catching trip at Fireside Lodge, and all said that we would see them again
Back for his second consecutive year was Mark McDermott with his son Sean from Chicago, IL First trip Mark came with his daughter Cailin, and this trip son Sean was fishing in Canada for his first time. Well, the trip with his daughter Cailin in 2007 was special and this trip with Sean was just as special. Sean caught his first Smallmouth and Northern Pike ever within 24 hours of arriving. In fact their first day they caught 17 Northern Pike, and Sean had a huge fish run and break his line. Sean’s eyes were full of excitement when telling the story back at the lodge. Second day they went Muskie fishing, and guess what?? Sean caught his first ever Muskie and it was a big fat 35-incher. WOW, all those Pike, your first Smallmouth, Musky, and Pike ever, and a big Musky in your first two days ever fishing in Canada at Fireside Lodge. They had three more days of catching over 20 Northern Pike each day, one of which they caught 23 all between 28 and 34 inches. On their last day Sean tied into another Muskie measuring a HUGE 41-inches. Sean is obviously a natural fisher, and his father is do a lot of credit for his fishing skills and preserverance. Great fishing trip and invaluable memories made by father and son Mark and Sean, and next year will be another as Mark made reservations for 2009. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend this special family time together.
Returning for their third consecutive year was family Dave, Terri, and Kaitlin Dobson from Milwaukee, WI. First day on the water they did great catching Northern Pike, landing about 30 and loosing 12-15 others. Great fun had by all. The second day they fished for Smallmouth catching over 50, most being 12 to 17-inches. WOW, what a fantastic day. The third day was another catching day as they caught 20 Smallmouth and 10 Northern Pike with Terri coming up with the catch of the day landing an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass, and this was all before 1PM, when they cam off the water because of storms. Even though this family does do very well catching fish it is not just about the fish for them, and Dave always says he fish are the bonus. They enjoy the quiet wilderness atmosphere and all that is available. The great photos, courtesy of Kaitlin’s photography, of a Mallard Ducks in a creek, Bald Eagles, Beautiful photos of a Great Blue Heron in it’s natural surroundings, and the grand prize photo was that of a Moose they saw while fishing. Another great accomplishment Kaitlin had was catching her first Muskie which was 35-inches. Terri and Kaitlin also did a Kayak adventure and really enjoyed their first time kayaking. Dave, Terri, and Kaitlin had another wonderful family vacation together packed full of memories to last a lifetime. Before departure they made their reservations for 2009.
Returning for their sixth time was Mike and Dee Hummel from Urbandale, IA. These two had another fabulous stay at Fireside Lodge. Mike got the ball rolling on the evening of arrival as he caught two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth while Fly Fishing, measuring 18 and 18.5-inches. They did well every day catching Smallmouth Bass. Mike caught all of his while Fly Fishing and Dee caught a few this way but most of her fish were caught using jigging techniques. Well, her techniques got her more than she bargained for, as she hooked and landed a HUGE 39.5-inch very heavy Northern Pike with no leader, 6lb test line, and a hair jig. WOW! What a catch by Dee. You have to look at this photo on our website below. Both had a great time enjoying the surroundings, the dinning room atmosphere at supper time, and the wildlife that flourishes in our area. They had such a great time they reserved their dates for next year before departing.
Back for their second year in a row were father and son, Ray and Mike Heika from Inverness, IL. This father and son team caught many fish during their stay, and according to Ray’s tally they landed 221 total fish, one Musky at 36-inches, 139 Northern Pike the largest being 35-inches, and 81 Smallmouth Bass with both Mike and Ray each catching a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth at 18 and 18.5 inches. As Ray described to me it was not just about the fishing, and how could it be when you have all the natural beauty and wildlife surrounding you while fishing. If you just focus on the fish and not the other wonders of the wilderness you miss a great part of fishing at Fireside Lodge. Also, for Ray and Mike it is about quality father and son time together, and making priceless memories never to be forgotten. Before departing Ray already confirmed his return with Mike in 2009. Thanks for making Fireside Lodge a place to spend special time together.
Returning for their fifth year were Steve Jensen from Springfield, MO and Jon Harrison from Georgetown, TX. One of their goals this trip was to catch more Pike Fly Fishing. Well, they got it done on the first day as the landed 35 and missed others. Second day they had a hot bite on Smallmouth until about noon when a cold front with rain came in a shut things down. The third day they went back to Northern Pike fishing, and again caught a lot of Pike on the fly and Steve caught something never thought possible on a Fly Rod. Steve actually hooked a clam. Knowing that Clams live on the bottom and do not react fast this is a fishing feat that only the best Fly Fishers can accomplish. Fourth day these two were determined to catch a Musky while fly fishing, however this great preadetor eluded there fly presentation, however they did catch a good number of Smallmouth while trying. Their fifth and final day before noon, when a severe storm and cold from hit, they caught a lot of Smallmouth to end a great Fly Fishing week. Jon and Steve enjoy it all, the sport of fly fishing, fly tying, the wilderness and wildlife, and the camaraderie and conversation amongst two friends, and other Fireside Lodge guests. Both had a FABULOUS trip and reserved dates for 2009 before leaving.
Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time were David, John, Doug, and John Sowatsky from Foothill Ranch, CA, Clyde Hill, WA, Sullivan, WI, and Almont, MI. First day ever fishing on Little Vermilion Lake System they caught 121 Northern Pike, 19 Smallmouth, and John caught a HUGE 20-inch Master Angles Award Smallmouth. Second day they caught 112 Northern Pike, 10 Smallmouth, and this time Doug caught a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth measuring 19-inches.Third day was a 35-40 Northern Pike day and all were bigger fish, over 30-inches with several in the 35 to 36-inch range. Also two Musky were caught with John from MI. catching his first Muskie ever, a nice 34-incher, and Doug caught a great Musky measuring 38-inches. Last day it was only John from WA and Dave fishing and they had another BIG fish day landing between 25 to 30 bigger Northern Pike, all over 30-inches up to a 40-inch Master Anglers Award Pike by John. Both said it was the first time they were so worn out from catching bigger fish. All had a fabulous family trip and hope to return to Fireside Lodge.
Returning for their eighth time were the Kleinwacther’s, Jim and his two sons David and Tom from Warrenville, IL and Herb and his son Matt from Yorkville, IL First day was just gang busters for this group as they caught well over 200 Northern Pike as TJ’s lure of choice was a Buzz Bait and Dave’s was a Spinner Bait. Second day they were in search for the BIG fish, and targeting Musky. Well, the results were GREAT as Herb caught a 33 and 38-inch Musky, Matt landed a 34 and 39-inch Muskie, TJ a 35-inch Pike, and David caught a 38-inch Musky. That’s a FANTASTIC day Musky catching. Third day Herb and Matt caught 54 Northern Pike, had nine doubles and two back-to-back doubles, plus Herb came up with the catch of the day landing a 41-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. Jim, TJ, and Dave had a lot of Musky follows, and Dave caught a 38-inch Northern Pike. Fourth day had Jim, Dave and TJ catching over 90 Northern Pike, with Herb and Matt catching less than the day before, but they were bigger and they saw the fish of all fish, estimated at well over 50-inches. Last day had Jim, Dave, and TJ catching 30-plus Northern Pike, and some nice Smallmouth Bass up to 17.5-inches, with Herb and Matt fishing with a BANG catching 94 Northern Pike. All had a great family fishing trip and hope to return again.
Curtis Stewart from Burnsville, MN and friend David Cornell from Roseville, CA were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. Here for a short three days they caught between 12 to 15 fish per day their first two days and on their third and final day really got into the Northern Pike catching what they said was “A Ton of Northern Pike”. Curtiss special lure that caught most of the fish was a in-line spinner with a tail special tied by fly fisher Steve Jensen above. Those are the type of things that happen at Fireside Lodge. Both had a great short stay and hope to return.
