Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 5/26 to 6/2 2007

Hello from Fireside Lodge in beautiful Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada. We have just completed our second week of the 2007 fishing season, which was cool and rainy with one very warm day.

Glenn Steiner and Frank Vandergrift from Allentown, PA. returned to Fireside lodge for their second time. They had a great extended stay of 10 nights / 9 days. During that time Glenn had fun catching some Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. Several times Glenn missed landing a large Northern Pike getting off right at boat side. The one that did not get away was a beauty of a Musky measuring 42 inches. This photo is on our 2007 Photo section of our website. Another day when Frank decided to stay in for the day another guest Frank Hazzard invited Glenn to fish with him. Well they had a bang up day catching 27 Northern Pike, 12 Smallmouth Bass one being an 18 inch Master Anglers Award Smallie, and Glen missed the fish of his life estimated to be a 45 inch monster. Glenn also loves to take wildlife photos and got some wonderful pictures of loons and other wildlife and scenery which makes fishing in Northwest Ontario more than just catching fish. Thanks for returning and Glenn before leaving was also trying to figure out a time period to return with his daughter.
Rick and Nancy Hoffman from Olathe, KS. Returned to Fireside Lodge. Nancy started fishing on Little Vermilion Lake 22 years ago with her father and has a whole boat load of memories, returning once again to update her and Rick’s memory book. First day on the water between Cedarbough and Little Vermilion Lake they caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass. Day two and three were filled with good fishing and enjoying the wildlife. They also enjoyed a hot shore lunch one day. Their fourth and last day was cold a rainy but despite the weather they caught some Smallmouth in the morning and after they shut down caught a lot of Northern Pike. Both had a great time away from work and the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Having the history on Little Vermilion Lake I am sure we will see Nancy and Rick one day soon.
Brothers Nam and An Nyugen from Apple Valley and Burnsville, MN., were fishing at Fireside Lodge for the first time. During their five days of fishing the did very good every day catching a combination of Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and a few incidental catches of Musky and Lake Trout. One day was slower number wise but was made up for by size as they landed several toothy critters in the 35 to 38 inch range and some bigger Smnallmouth Bass. I knew they would do good when on arrival they told me they used medium to smaller baits, and also enjoyed fishing with plastics. Another reason these brothers did so well was there continuous positive attitude despite rainy cooler temperatures. They took some great photos and I would recommend going to our website’s 2007 photo page to see some of the beautiful fish caught by Nam and An. They had a fabulous first trip to Fireside Lodge, were very sad to leave, and will return one day.
Ken Beta from Fox Lake, IL., and brother Larry Psyk from Onalaska, WI., were back for their second consecutive trip to Fireside Lodge and this year brought Larry Psyk Jr. from LaCrosse, WI., Danny Gurley from Cicero, IL., plus father and son Jim and Jim Jr Nelson from Famington Hills, and LaGrange, IL. These guys had a ball just being together with friends and family. After a slower first day Larry Sr landed two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth one at 18.5 inches and the other was a huge 20.5 inch Smallie. Ken Beta after losing the biggest fish of his life on the first day had a repeat performance on the second day and Jim and Jim Jr. caught 6 Smallmouth, but being the first time ever fishing for Smallmouth Bass they were just warming up. Another day the group caught 40+ Smallmouth Bass and the highlights were when Danny landed a 40 inch Musky on a crappie beetle spin and Jim Jr caught his first Muskie doing it in style landing a 40.5 inch Muskie on a Little Cleo. All had a wonderful stay and the group made reservations for 2008 before departing. We all missed their music after they were gone.
Long time guests Aaron and Michele Hayes from North Aurora, IL. returned to Fireside Lodge for their fist of two trips in 2007. Well within the first two hours of arrival they got into a pod of Northern Pike and caught 18 before supper. Also Michele had a fabulous Humming Bird experience as it was attracted to her Fireside Lodge cap thinking it was some type of colorful flower. First full day was a little slower however they did catch some Smallmouth and toothy critters including a 37 inch Northern Pike. Second day they landed 17 Northern Pike and 6 Smallmouth Bass. Third day had them catching 13 Northern Pike with several in the 34 inch range, 6 Smallmouth and Michele caught two Musky one being 39 inches. They finished strong on the last day catching 24 Smallmouth Bass and 10 Northern Pike. They had a very fun week and are looking very forward to returning in the first week in September.
Father and son Larry and Scott Siebenthal from Creve Coeur, IL. Were back to Fireside Lodge for their 6th consecutive year. These two are toothy critter maniacs. Some of there best days had them catching 28, 41,25 and, 35 Northern Pike. Size wise they caught many in the 30 to 35 inch range, a Number of 36 to 39 inch Pike and Musky, and the two biggest fish were Larry’s two Master Anglers Award fish a Northern Pike at 40 inches, and his Smallmouth measuring 18 inches, and Scott’s two Master Anglers fish, a HUGE Smallmouth Bass at 20.5 inches and a Monstrous Muskie measured at 44 inches. Both had a ton of fun as always and took fabulous fish pictures. One of these two has made the cover of our brochure the last three years. To see why view their pictures on our 2007 Photo Page at the website listed below.
