Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report 7/14 to 7/21 2007

Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada. The weather this week was a pleasurable week with temperatures in the 70’s every day and getting down in the lower 50’s and night. Just about perfect.

Back for their fourth trip to Fireside Lodge were Mike and Andy Pritzl from Caledonia, WI. Here for a short three days and only seeing these two at suppertime, and very briefly. They do keep close tabs on fish caught and in an email sent to me by Mike he said that him and Andy caught 60 Smallmouth and 40 Northern Pike during their stay. Andy caught 3 Master Anglers Award Smallmouth one being 18 –inches and two Giant Smallmouth measuring 19 inches each. Both left having a fabulous time and made another set of Fireside Lodge fishing memories.

Returning to Fireside Lodge for the second time was Greg Sebben, Bryan Coveny from Joliet, IL with Shawn Carrol and father Jack from Plainfield and Joliet, IL and Kim and Cynthia Neurohr from Channahon, IL. First day out the whole group caught some fish and had fun. Cindy caught her very first Canadian fish, which was an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass, and the rest of the group had to live with this fact for the whole week. They did well the rest of the week catching a lot of Northern Pike, Jack and Sean caught a lot of Smallmouth in the 13 to 17.5 inch range. Sean came up with the toothy critter of the week for the group by landing a HUGE 40-inch Tiger Muskie. Great going Sean, and look for his picture with his great catch on our website at www.firesidelodge.com under the current photo page. Everyone had a great week and hope to return in two years.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time were family Brian, Tanny, and TJ Prehm from AR. This was a dreamed about venture for this family and all were beaming with excitement after arriving. During their three-day stay they had two fabulous days catching over 30 Northern Pike and another day catching 38 Northern Pike. All had fun and hope to return one day for a longer time. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge for your first Canadian Fishing Adventure and making family memories.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for the first time was a group from Kentucky consisting of Leonard Heydt from Louisville, Richard Albers from Goshen, and David Stoltz and Philip Schaad both from Prospect. These fellows were very patient and persistent in learning the lake, and catching a few Smallmouth along the way. Here for only four days, facing a cold front, and Smallmouth in a negative feeding time period, they stuck with it having a good catching last day as Rick and Leonard caught 28 Smallmouth with a lot of good size fish. Phil and Dave caught about as many but Smaller fish. All had a very good time and while departing saying we would see them next year.

Fran and Colleen Stack arrived from Lorain, OH for their fourth consecutive year fishing at Fireside Lodge. This couple always has a blast as exemplified by the constant smiles on their faces. Every year for last four years I always look forward to hearing about Fran and Colleen’s day, as it is positive in one way or another. First day on the water they caught 19 Northern Pike up to 30.5 inches. Another day they portaged into a lake and landed about 25 Northern Pike. Other days had them catching a nice combination of Smallmouth and Northern Pike. Their last day they had a great beginning as while navigating through a creek they had a Moose running right in front of their boat. They were not Camera ready as it took them by surprise, but the memory will be with Fran and Colleen forever. On this last day the caught over 25 Northern Pike and Colleen caught a beauty of a Musky measuring 34 inches. Both left saying they had aw wonderful stay at Fireside Lodge and Colleens’ last statement was that they would see us in 11 months and three weeks.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their second year in a row were Pat Hobson from Elwood, IN and Larry Hinshaw from Blue Grass, IA. These two did fantastic. After catching several nice Northern Pike and some Smallmouth during the day, Larry caught Smallmouth on three consecutive casts, when all of a sudden Pat hooked into a Musky on Smallmouth tackle. The fight was on and after about 20 minutes Pat landed this 40-inch Giant. While holding it for a picture the fish jumped out of his hands right back to the water and swam off as quick as the eye could focus. Photo opt was lost however a fabulous memory made between two close friends. Another day they caught 38 Northern Pike and 2 Smallmouth Bass. The fourth day had them catching many nice Smallmouth and 8 Northern Pike between 30 to 36 inches. The fifth day was very slow but was made up for on the last day as they caught over 50 Northern Pike and 21 Smallmouth, including many 15 to 17 inchers, and each caught an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. GRRRREAT time was had by two friends, wonderful memories made.

Michael and Zack Gerulski from Midland, MI, returned to Fireside Lodge for their 6th consecutive year. This father and son have been coming to Fireside Lodge since Zack was 11 and he is now 16 tears old. As fishing goes they had several very good days and several moderate catching days. In all they caught 77 Smallmouth Bass, 10 Northern Pike and 1 Muskie, most being very good size. Zack caught his first ever Musky and he also caught an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Way to go Zack. Zack discovered a secret lure, which he makes up, that has increasingly become his edge bait, meaning the one that gives him the catching edge. What is it you ask?? Can’t tell as Zack may produce and sell it on the market one day soon. I am plugging for the exclusive Canadian distributorship. Names for the lure got knocked around and we came up with the idea of calling it “Zack’s Bass Zapper”. Besides having a great time fishing together Mike and Zack enjoyed the wilderness, wildlife, quiet, and seclusion we have to offer at Fireside Lodge. The last night was very exciting for them, as they had seen a Moose in the same bay they were fishing. She was up to hr shoulders in water and totally submerging her head under water to feed on vegetation. They took many good photos and made another unforgettable memory at Fireside Lodge.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time was Tom Johnson from Eden Prairie, Mn and Julie Dahl from Shakopee, MN. This father and daughter have been fishing in Canada together every year since Julie was young girl. Julie is now a married teacher with children and still manages to get away with her dad for three days of fishing in the great wilderness she grew up to know and love. First day was a Quality fish day as they caught 8 Northern Pike over 31 inches, and Julie caught a big 36 incher. Tom caught a GIANT Master Anglers Award 47-inch Musky. Great first day on Little Vermilion Lake. Second day they caught 21 Northern Pike, and their third day was FABULOS as they caught 48 fish total. 10 Smallmouth Bass and 38 Northern Pike with Julie catching the largest at 38 inches. On her very last cast Julie also caught a HUGE 19.5 inch Smallmouth Bass. What a great finish as both went home Fireside Lodge Master Anglers. The greatest catch of all was another set of wonderful fishing memories made between father and daughter. I am glad Tom and Julie decided to come to Fireside Lodge, as we are now part of their fishing memory log.

Don and Matt Holesinger from Fulton and Roscoe, IL came for their first fishing experience at Fireside Lodge. First day these two caught some nice Smallmouth Bass, each catching an 18-inch Master Anglers award Smallmouth. Second day they caught over 25 Northern Pike. Third day was a TERRIFIC day for Don and Matt as they caught over 40 Northern Pike. Their last day was a little slower, but both left enjoying their stay, and making father and son memories fishing at Fireside Lodge.

Good friend and Fireside Lodge guest Brian Bakke referred John Anderson and Todd Meyers from Naperville, IL to Fireside Lodge. First day ever fishing on Little Vermilion Lake they caught over 20 fish, which was a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. Todd showed his ability as an angler by catching a big 35 inch Northern Pike on 4lb test line, and it was a fun fight as shown by the smiling face of Todd while he told the story of his catch in the dinning room. Second day they had a GRRRREAT day catching 37 Northern Pike. On their third and final day they fished for and caught over 30 good size Smallmouth Bass. They arrived full of smiles and laughter, and left the same way saying they will bring their sons next year.

Russell and Kathryn Wright from Alum, WV were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time by referral from long time guest Dan Mosier from Lincoln, NE. Fabulous people can’t help but have a Fabulous time, as did Russell and Kathryn. First day ever on our lake system they caught 21 Northern Pike. Second day was a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. Third day things really picked up as Russell and Kathryn caught 35 total fish between Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. Russell had a number of big Smallmouth 16 to 17.75 inches. Fourth and final day was a Smallmouth day, as many were caught and Russell seemed to have the hot hand. Both had a wonderful stay at Fireside Lodge enjoying all there is to offer, such as wilderness setting, boreal forest, wildlife and birds, spectacular sunsets, along with great meals, accommodations and service. After leaving Fireside Lodge they were on their way to visit their old friends Dan and Sandy Mosier in Lincoln, NE, and some of their final words were they would return one day with Dan and Sandy.

Back fishing at Fireside Lodge for their fourth consecutive year was good friends Kent Williams and Bill Black from Atlanta, GA. First day they had a terrific day catching many Smallmouth, and Kent landed a big 18.5 inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Bill said they could have caught all the Smallmouth they wanted, but switched to toothy critters, and caught 6 nice Northern Pike between 30 to 33 inches, and Kent caught a 35 incher. However the catch of the day was by Kent as he also caught a very large 39-inch Tiger Musky. The great thing about fishing is one day it makes you feel like you know it all, and then the next day it humbles you to realize you do not. The second day for Kent and Bill were one of those humbling days. Third day they bounced right back catching a lot of Smallmouth again, and Bill came very close to a Master Anglers Award size Smallmouth with a 17.5 incher, and they also caught 7-8 good size Northern Pike. Their fourth and final day was a very good day, again mixing up their Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass catch, and just enjoying their final day between to good friends in our great wilderness fishing setting. They left all charged up getting ready to plan next years return to Fireside Lodge.
